A new era for natural products research in Uganda begins! 🇺🇬🌿🔬 We were privileged to welcome Hon. Eng. Jonard Asiimwe Akiki, Minister for Science, Technology and Innovation, as Guest of Honour at the commissioning of the Natural Products Research and Innovation Centre (NaPRiC) at @BusitemaUni
. We extend our deepest appreciation to the Vice Chancellor, University Council, Management, @sobakiro
and the @bunapric team, all who contributed from the Centre's inception to its realization. Special thanks to
@DrMusenero for her visionary leadership in championing this initiative, and to the @GovUganda
, through the @STIsecretariat –Office of the President, for investing in science, innovation, and homegrown solutions that will transform lives. Together, we are shaping Uganda's future through research and innovation
As I continue advancing Uganda's Science, Technology and Innovation agenda, today I visited Busitema University, Arapai Campus to deepen our engagement on one of the country's most strategic initiativesthe proposed Eastern Regional Agro-Science, Technology and Industrial Park. Building on yesterday's engagements at the Main Campus, today's discussions moved beyond vision to implementation, focusing on transforming research into enterprise, accelerating agro-industrial value addition, strengthening technology transfer, and positioning Eastern Uganda as a competitive hub for science-driven production, innovation, and industrial growth. A tour of the proposed project site and university facilities further reinforced the immense potential that exists when academic excellence is deliberately aligned with national development priorities.
My engagements with the Faculty of Agriculture and Animal Sciences (FAAS), researchers, innovators, students, and the wider university community reaffirmed a conviction that will continue to guide our work: innovation delivers its greatest value only when it solves real problems, creates jobs, and builds industries. The future of Uganda's economy will not be secured by exporting raw potential, but by commercializing research, deepening academia-industry collaboration, and building institutions that convert knowledge into technologies, enterprises, and shared prosperity. This is the direction we have chosen, and we must pursue it with discipline, urgency, and unwavering resolve.
Minister of Science, Technology and Innovation, @EngJonard, has launched a nationwide tour of public universities with a bold message, innovation must move beyond classroom projects and become a driver of jobs, wealth creation and national transformation.

Busitema University – Main Campus 📍
In witness of a significant milestone in Uganda’s transition toward a science-driven, innovation-led industrial economy. The handover of the Electric Bus and commissioning of the high-capacity DC fast-charging system demonstrates that advanced mobility technologies can be designed, built, and deployed within our own institutions, reinforcing a shift from technology importation to homegrown engineering excellence.
Engagements with researchers, faculty, and students highlighted the university’s evolving role as a hub for applied research and technological production.
By strengthening collaboration between academia and industry, Busitema University is accelerating the conversion of research into scalable solutions that advance industrial growth, strengthen technical capacity, and support sustainable national development.
