State and non-state actors linked to public affairs increasingly use both digital and physical spaces to intimidate, censor, or silence individuals who question them or express views they find unfavorable.
Many of these actors hide under the Cybercrime Act, which was originally developed to address various forms of online crime but has now been exploited as an instrument for suppressing citizens’ voices, even after amendments to some of its provisions in 2024.
When citizens, journalists, and civic actors have to worry about their safety both online and offline, simply for commenting on or reporting national issues, the state of press freedom in Nigeria becomes deeply concerning.
