Suica Penguin replacement candidates expected this summer. 🐧🚊

JR East has announced that the iconic penguin will graduate at the end of the 2026 fiscal year, passing the baton to a successor that symbolizes Suica's evolution into a "device for daily life," with the new character to be chosen through a process where young creators produce drafts based on the "Suica Renaissance" worldview followed by a public vote.

Here is the full timeline for the transition:

February 2026

The process begins by gathering employee expectations and commissioning draft illustrations.

Summer 2026

Three final candidates will be published, and the winner will be decided through a customer vote.

November 18, 2026

The design of the new character will be officially announced on Suica's 25th anniversary.

Winter 2026

A public open call will be launched to determine the new character's nickname.

March 2027

A "Baton Touch" ceremony will be held to welcome the new mascot.

April 2027

The new character officially debuts.

To honor the current mascot, the "Penguin Years" campaign launches in March 2026, featuring a special website, limited goods, and a "Touch at Ticket Gates" digital stamp campaign on the Yamanote Line via JRE WALLET.
