1776: “You’re taxing WHAT?!” 🇺🇸
2026: “Just put it on autopay.” 📱
The wild part isn’t just how much we’re taxed.
It’s how many times the SAME dollar gets taxed.
You earn it → income/payroll taxes.
You spend it → sales taxes.
You own a home → property taxes.
You buy gas → fuel taxes.
You invest and profit → capital gains taxes.
You run a business → another stack of taxes.
Depending on where you live and what you buy, there are excise taxes, vehicle taxes, hotel taxes, utility taxes, and more.
Tax on top of tax on top of tax.
And then there’s the one nobody sends you a bill for:
Inflation.
Inflation technically isn’t a tax, but when your money loses purchasing power, the effect can feel a lot like a hidden tax.
Your bank account can show the same number while that number quietly buys less.
So you can lose purchasing power without a single dollar being deducted from your account.
That might be the most effective “tax” of all:
the one people don’t recognize as a bill.
🇺🇸 How many times should the government be able to take a piece of the same dollar?
