🚨Thailand has begun tightening health screening at major international airports after India confirmed 5 cases of Nipah virus, a disease with a mortality rate of up to 75%.

Nipah virus (NiV) is a highly fatal zoonotic virus that causes severe respiratory illness and fatal encephalitis (brain inflammation) in humans. Transmitted mainly by fruit bats and pigs, it spreads to humans via direct contact with infected animals or contaminated food. No specific drugs or vaccines exist.

The World Health Organization lists Nipah virus among pathogens targeted under its R&D Blueprint for diseases with epidemic potential.

WHO says Nipah can range from mild illness to acute respiratory infection and fatal encephalitis, with an estimated case fatality rate of 40%–75%, depending on the outbreak and health-system capacity.
