Main things I've taken away from this talk:
Prep is everything.
Connect with people; this industry is all about who you know.
Try to avoid paying $10,000 in taxes π .
Say yes to everything.
And the fact that after all that prep, she only winds up using 10% of that board is crazy to think. It's good to hear how she can use the same board. It makes sense when teams play back-to-back nights, and you can't possibly prep in the time between games.
It's cool that Dorian showed us her boards and told us how she preps for games. Going back to my last comment, she said it takes 2-4 hours to prepare these boards for games.
"Wasn't a lack of faith... It's a numbers game." So many people don't know what sports announcers actually do and how much prep is needed for every game.
Didn't even think about how paying taxes comes into the equation. Crazy to hear how she had a 10k tax bill. Just one more thing that can come from freelance jobs.
"You don't need an agent starting off... Don't give away free money." Dorian said a lot of people try to start off too hot and get an expensive agent too quickly when they don't need one.
Interesting to learn about how agents in the media world can get paid for jobs even after you've ended your contract with them. Sucks that this could lead to an endless spiral with terrible agents.
"Start off small and prove your worth." I think this is the case for so many jobs in the media world. She also mentioned it's who you know in the industry.
"Sports media is the only thing I've ever wanted to do." Super cool to hear how she's wanted this her whole life, even skipping school to watch SportsCenter.
