It’s more than just forced parenthood.
Even if the US magically had robust governmental support gor parents, pregnancy is a physically grueling, highly dangerous experience.
Giving birth is 14x more deadly than an abortion.
We are one of only a few countries in the world with no form of paid leave.
We invest less in childcare than most OECD nations.
Our maternal mortality rate is a crisis.
This must be the Onion, right? No way anyone can argue w/ a straight face that "women can have it all" after a she-cession that saw women leave the workforce in numbers setting us back decades. Not to mention that women's gains @ work and elsewhere were only possible b/c of Roe
Today, a male colleague on a conference call acknowledged he was also in the pick up lane at school. I appreciate men being transparent about what it takes to juggle law practice and family. More of this, please.
Some good news (in an otherwise bleak morning in VA): #paidleave is back! Grateful to the tireless advocates for making this happen.
4 weeks is not enough, but it's a hugely impt first step - esp for the millions of workers who don't have access to a SINGLE DAY of PFL right now
WE DID IT.
Paid family and medical leave is back in.
From my work as Senator Dodd’s Chief of Staff to drafting and introducing the first-ever paid family and medical leave bill in 2013, I never stopped fighting for #PaidLeaveForAll.
Care is universal to the human experience, but unfortunately the ability to care for yourself or your loved ones without fear of losing the roof over your head or the ability to feed your family will continue to be reserved for the lucky few. #CareCantWait
Deeply, deeply disappointed tonight. That our representatives still won't prioritize #paidleave after nearly 2 years of living through a global pandemic is incomprehensible. This may have been the best chance in a generation to fix this gaping hole in the social safety net.

All of this! If we want to reverse declining birth rates, we need to actually support pregnant women and new mothers in this country with reasonable accommodations, paid leave & affordable childcare

Remember people coming to work coughing and clearly sick, and the ethos among employers was “good, way to power through it!”
That’s always been costly for businesses, bad for everyone. COVID was just a reminder.
We’ll go right back to that if people don’t have paid sick leave.
Join me on May 11th at @ABetterBalance’s spring celebration, an inspirational evening celebrating 15 years of our commitment to advancing justice for women & working families and combating the care crisis. Register here for the free virtual event: https://t.co/738wMjgaKv
So many women have told me they settled for jobs that were less than they wanted because they’d let them pick up their kids when school ended or not take work home. What if most jobs let people do that? Seems worth considering as we figure out what a return to offices looks like.
My wish for #EqualPayDay is that we move beyond the narrow focus on paying women and men with the same job titles equally. The gender wage gap is a measure of systemic inequality. The solutions--child care, paid leave, addressing harassment & discrimination--are systemic too
As long as employers continue to rely on punitive attendance policies that fail to protect workers' rights, these stories will continue to be common. Proud to be working on this important case.
One Friday, Georgia factory worker Kaytiara McAlister had severe abdominal pain and heavy bleeding related to her pregnancy. On her doctor's advice, she left her shift early to go home and rest. When she came back Monday, she was fired.
Now she's suing.
