Summer Signings Boost Ambitious Boldon
Boldon approach the new season with a very different energy to last season. Their 20thโplace finish (36 points) told the story of a side fighting to stay afloat, saved by paperwork rather then points but the clubโs summer has been anything but passive. Recruitment has been sharp, targeted and clearly designed to challenge at the top end of the table.
Thereโs an obvious ambition about Boldon now and their first five fixtures give them a platform to show it: three games against sides that finished bottom half, a visit from a promoted side is favourable to a Villa side that should hit the ground running.
Boldon kick off the season at home to Grangetown Boys Club. A familiar opponent would had a comparable campaign as they finished three places - and five points - better off. Last seasonโs corresponding fixture at Welfare Park ended level at 1-1. A strong start here would immediately validate the clubโs summer ambition.
They then make the short trip to Sunderland RCA. Boldon drew 1-1 at Meadow Park, a Kev Humble penalty securing a point. is never easy. A test to see if they have genuinely raised their physical and tactical ceiling.
A first top four test is next as they travel to FC Hartlepool. FC finished 4th last season with one of NL2 strongest home records; including a 4โ1 win last season that completed a league double. This will be a stern examination of Boldonโs top six credentials.
Next sees them host Stokesley SC. North Riding Champions Stokesley are back in the Northern League after a ten season absence, making this a prime opportunity for Boldon to assert their upgraded identity. Although they lost both league games at the Villa against last seasonโs newly promoted sides - AFC Newbiggin & Durham United. Despite that, this is a crucial home fixture where ambition must translate into points.
The final game of their First Five sees them welcome Billingham Town to Welfare Park. Town cruised to 4โ0 win in the corresponding home game last season - a performance symbolic of Boldonโs fragility. This year, with a stronger squad and a more ambitious outlook, a draw against another, albeit more quiet, ambitious side would be respectable; a win would be a statement.
Boldonโs recruitment has raised expectations - and with three early home fixtures, this opening run gives them the perfect stage to prove theyโre no longer a bottomโfour side but a club genuinely aiming significantly upward.
