Yale Says 78% of Ocean Microplastics Come From a Source You Would Never Guess

While automobile manufacturers and politicians scurry to shift production processes to a zero-emissions industry in the coming years, a new study has shown that what comes out of the tailpipe isn’t the only big bad polluter worth obsessing over. A paper published by the Yale School of the Environment found tire dust — microscopic particles that break down and wear off of a tire over time — account for a whopping 78 percent of the ocean’s microplastics.

Ironically, our tires are designed with blends of natural and synthetic rubbers and plastics meant to mitigate the natural breaking down of a tire as it runs over pavement. Some of them coincidentally have created a toxic cocktail when tire particles inevitably find their way into road runoff and eventually fish. Researchers’ determination to narrow down the culprit(s), like a chemical called 6PPD, for example, brought them to uncover just how much tire dust is emitted from driving. According to a three-year study done in the UK, a car’s four tires churn out one trillion particles for every kilometer driven. Suddenly that 78 percent doesn’t seem so surprising. And while two billion tires are made each year now, the Yale University report points out that number is expected to reach 3.4 billion by the end of the decade.
