It is with profound sadness that the @sccfiredept and @sccfirefighters, Local 1165, share the passing of one of their own.
Battalion Chief Monique Vandenberg, 58, passed away on April 30, 2026, from job-related cancer after more than two decades of dedicated service. Her sacrifice and legacy will never be forgotten by her family, her fire service family, and the community she faithfully served.
A memorial service will be held in her honor.

We’re excited to share the new Chair for the California Fire Foundation Board of Directors, Darrell “Doc” Roberts!
Chair Roberts is an active-duty Battalion Chief for the Chula Vista Fire Department and is the President of @cafirefighters. He has served on our board for six years, and joined us in Altadena doing disaster relief aid distribution along with his wife, Mel. He has also served on FEMA’s Urban Search and Rescue California Task Force 8.
We look forward to working with Chair Roberts on our mission to provide support to families of fallen firefighters, firefighters and the communities they protect.
