In a recent study, Pranav Jindal, Associate Professor, Marketing, ISB, explores how unanticipated delays by sellers during price negotiations affect consumer behaviour and willingness to pay (WTP).
The research, co-authored by Preyas Desai, uses data on bargaining threads to test whether there exists any correlation between response times and purchase likelihood.
Through three laboratory experiments, they vary the seller’s response across conditions and describe any delay in the seller’s response in terms of exogenous reasons. They find that unanticipated delays that arise during the bargaining process might have an upside.
These findings indicate a possible increase in the buyers’ WTP under bargaining, and both buyers and sellers could benefit from them.
