erwin had been a titan shifter for several years, yes, but besides this fact, his body had stayed the same throughout his life, mostly. because he's just a normal human, and it was nothing new for him to get used to living in the same body he had before inheriting the shifter's powers

but for levi, it's a disaster. he lost his ackerman powers that he had all his life, that he had relied on all his life, and he's disabeyesled now. one of his eye is blind, one of his hands doesn't function as it used to, he can't walk normally. he is generally weaker, and he's so not used to his body being weak, especially considering he'd used the strength of his body for years to protect erwin

and it's all so new for erwin too — he is also used to levi being the strongest, for levi joking about how he can easily overpower him, how he can throw him off, or fight back, and erwin wouldn't be able to do anything with it

but not anymore. erwin isn't used to being the stronger one between the two of them, isn't used to coddling levi in a physical sense. he has to remind himself that levi is literally physically weaker than him now, smaller, less healthy. he has to be cautious with him, has to remember the limitations levi's own body imposed upon itself

he is hesitant to even playfully restrict levi in bed, because before, they both had known levi can get free any time he wanted, but it's not true anymore. erwin can't just lie down on levi, putting his entire weight on him, cuddling, because he's bigger and weighs more; he can't just hover over levi, because even though he knows full well levi trusts him, he doesn't want to make him feel trapped or unsafe in any other way

and of course levi's annoyance at his own failing body doesn't help. erwin tries to assure him that it's okay, he doesn't care how levi looks, he didn't love levi because of what his body can do or endure, but it doesn't really work

levi feels guilty because he feels like he failed erwin in the most fundamental way — his love's sword and shield is no more, and he hates being so useless. what if something happens? what if some crazy vigilantes or yeagerists come to their home to finish what they had failed to do and take erwin from him, this time forever? he will be helpless to stop it, will be helpless to protect erwin

and erwin feels guilty because his body is intact, because his shifter's powers helped him go through the war without a scratch, and he hates that levi, injured and weakened, has to look at his healthy partner walking around as if nothing had happened to him at all

he knows levi doesn't "envy" him, of course not, but he sometimes foolishly hates that his arm is back. but then he thinks that there is a good part in it, too — if he's healthy and strong, he can take care of levi now, just like levi used to all these years
