🚨 Centralized vs Decentralized: When “Your Account” Isn’t Really Yours

In the world of centralized social media, your identity can be stolen, not by hacking your password, but by convincing the platform you’re the fake one.

That’s exactly what happened to two of Romania’s top creators, Daniel Cafelutza and Rares Gabriel, who together generate over 300 million monthly views across social platforms.

A few months ago, a group of individuals falsely impersonated Daniel, submitting forged identity documents to Instagram and claiming that his verified account was the fake one. Shockingly, Meta’s system believed them and took down Daniel’s real account, while the impostors demanded a ransom to “help” restore it.

Daniel paid once to recover it, but months later, the same scammers did it again, using the exact same method. This time, he refused to pay. He reached out to Instagram support, but found no human help. Only bots, automated replies, and endless forms. Despite being one of the most-watched creators in Romania, his account remains suspended, and his access to millions of followers blocked.

👮 Both he and Rares reported the incident to the police, but investigations take time and meanwhile, the damage is done. Two creators, hundreds of millions of monthly views, and a total loss of control over their digital presence.

This is what happens when power over identity lies in the hands of centralized platforms. One false report can erase your entire career.
