As you may have heard, this summer Southern California had a salp bloomโฆ but what exactly is a salp? ๐ค
Salps are gelatinous planktonic animals that belong to the Tunicate Phylum. We saw so many on our summer cruise!
๐๐ข Exciting news from the ocean! The CalCOFI ship was out in full force, conducting vital research off the coast of Manhattan Beach.๐ฟ๐ฌ

#Fish Spotlight: Caulolatilus princeps (#Ocean Whitefish)
#larva was collected near the #ChannelIslands during fall #CalCOFI 2014 survey
The larvae are ID'd by their stout body, large head, early formation of preopercular spines & spiny ridges on their head

Thanks to @PatagoniaVTA for having us in store to table last Friday! Had some great conversations about #smallfish and our ocean off of California!
@PatagoniaProv
When Annie Adams and Mallika Gupta began their internship with @calcofi, many of their peers didn't know about a major looming threat in the Pacific: decreasing oxygen levels, which cause hypoxia. So they decided to tell the story through data: https://t.co/OwwbXZT5Gx
THE STORY IN THE DATA
Marine science interns turn to storytelling to clarify the numbers behind hypoxia in California

Thanks to NOAA @sanctuaries for sending out such great scientists to help us out. They did a fantastic job & we hope to see them on future CalCOFI cruises
Can't wait to continue this #sciencecollaboration
Spring #CalCOFI 2023 a success!
We ended in San Francisco on Monday to a beautiful view of the #GoldenGateBridge
We're collaborating with the Office of National Marine Sanctuaries, #ChannelIslands & #MontereyBay to enhance our respective missions
We incorporated new CalCOFI stations within these Sanctiaries
Last fall, we had a special cruise to test out these new stations & this cruise was the 1st time we've fully integrated these stations into our routine cruise pattern.
