To send #ESAJuice straight to Jupiter would have required an impossible amount of propellant.
So instead, Juice is taking the scenic route, using the gravity of the Moon, Earth and Venus to adjust its course.
The first flyby is due on 19–20 August👇https://t.co/rKTJyvcOtg
Callisto is the third-largest moon in the solar system, and the second-largest satellite orbiting Jupiter. The surface of Callisto is the oldest and most heavily cratered object in the solar system. It orbits Jupiter at a distance 6x greater than our Moon orbits the Earth.
🍹 #OTD 14 April 2023, ESA's latest interplanetary mission, #ESAJuice, lifted off on Ariane 5 flight #VA260 from @EuropeSpacePort to begin its eight-year journey to Jupiter, where it will study the planet’s three large moons: Ganymede, Callisto and Europa 👇

#ESAJuice will not only explore the subsurface oceans of Jupiter’s icy moons, but also turn to the gas giant itself. What will Juice study?
☁️ Jupiter’s atmosphere
🧲 Its magnetic environment
💍 Jupiter’s invisible rings

*The partially eclipsed full moon, with Jupiter, and the four Galilean moons of Io, Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto
>Easiest major moon to get to
>Least radiation
>Not completely differentiated (all the rocks aren't at bottom of ocean)
>Obvious trade hub for Trojans, Jovian system, asteroid belt.
This week #Jupiter comes at its closest to Earth (perigee) and also lies opposite to the Sun in the sky (opposition).
This is the perfect timing to go out and look for the gas giant that is the destination of #ESAJuice.

Favourite moon of Jupiter? Mine is Callisto🧑🏽🚀 — sarars // AHHH best question i've received thank you, fun fact jupiter is my favorite planet and also the first one i saw wi… https://t.co/iXspxPo5aE
More good news from #ESAJuice instrument teams: the Moons And Jupiter Imaging Spectrometer (MAJIS) has completed its post-launch check-out! 👏
It will study the surface composition & exosphere of the icy moons and characterise the composition & dynamics of Jupiter’s atmosphere
