A Dhaka court on Saturday placed Hasnatul Islam Faiyaz, 17, an eleventh grade student of Dhaka College, on a seven-day remand in a case filed with Jatrabari police station, accusing him of killing a cop on July 24 during the quota protest. He just got admitted to Dhaka College after achieving GPA 5 on SSC.

Faiyaz’s uncle Md Shamim, on the premises of the Dhaka chief metropolitan magistrates court, said that Faiyaz was picked up from his house on Wednesday night but produced before the court on Saturday. He mentioned they waited in front of the court everyday, and went to every police station where they denied having custody of him. On the 26th morning, they suddenly spotted him being brought to the court, where he was reportedly being brought from the DB office.

He also alleged that Faiyaz informed them that he was tortured by police at Jatrabari police station after his detention, where he was initially taken into custody.

Faiyaz’s lawyer Md Estiyak Hossain Zipu mentioned that they submitted a petition to the court for holding a hearing at the juvenile court, considering Faiyaz’s age, but the court did not respond to the plea and placed him on a seven-day remand.

Since the beginning of the anti-discrimination student movement, there has been a clear policy: if one group of coordinators is taken away, the others will step up to lead. If anyone is detained and forced to give a statement, those of us who remain in the field will continue the fight.

Before Nahid Bhai, Asif Bhai, and Baker Bhai were taken from Gonoshashthya, they clearly stated, "Even if we’re not here, you must keep the movement alive. We can face a lot of challenges, but those who are outside will remain on command."

So, holding onto the final words of our seniors, we are moving the movement forward. The statements obtained under coercion, are being rejected by the student community of Bangladesh in a obvious way

We strongly condemn and protest the forced, scripted statements obtained under gunpoint at the DB office, which disrespects the sacrifices of hundreds of martyrs who have lost their lives due to government security forces' bullets and attacks from the student wing of the ruling party. We have remained steadfast in our demands, and we will continue to do so.

Dear fellow citizens and students,

In recent days, after widespread killings and mass arrests, the government has now staged a new drama. By detaining the coordinators of the anti-discrimination student movement at the DB office and forcing them to deliver scripted statements at gunpoint, the government has shown utter contempt for the demands of the student community. Furthermore, families of the martyrs who lost their lives at the hands of state forces and student thugs have been threatened and intimidated, while the armed forces have been used to extract false testimonies and shift all blame onto the activists, mocking the blood of the martyrs. We want to make it clear that the student community will never betray the blood of our martyrs until our last breath.

Dear citizens, you are aware that the government has been brutally oppressing ordinary students in the name of the quota reform movement. After a wave of violent repression, the government has conducted raids and made mass arrests across the country. Thousands of cases have been filed, and arrests are ongoing. Innocent children, like Samir, have been shot and killed while studying by the window. The largest and most brutal attack on private university students in recent history has taken place. Even school and college students have been subjected to appalling assaults, resulting in numerous injuries and deaths. In this dire situation, we want to firmly state that the student movement will continue until our demands are met.

Program: Tomorrow, there will be protests and rallies across the country organized by students and the public.

We urge all citizens of Bangladesh to express their solidarity along with our demands.

University Teacher's Network gathered at Dhaka University on Monday 29th July, the day two students Dia Khanam Mim (17) and Abdul Karim Rajib (18) were killed in 2018 in a road accident.
