Very clearly the theme on X today is going to be: "Let's mock and ridicule the English for their loss," which is an interesting contrast to all of the whining for Egypt and the outpouring of sympathy for Norway when they got knocked out.

Why that contrast I wonder? I think it's because deep down, everyone still intuitively understands English superiority and naturally feels resentment as a result.

You won at a game of the sport we created. Well done. We won at developing values and shaping the world for the better with our contributions to law, science, culture, and technology.

We gave the world the Industrial Revolution and the Magna Carta, which laid the groundwork for constitutional government, the rule of law, and freedom of speech. We gave the world parliamentary democracy as leading a model of governance in developed nations.

Sir Isaac Newton discovered gravity, Charles Darwin discovered evolution, Michael Faraday laid the foundation for modern electronics, Alan Turing developed the first computer while cracking the Enigma code that helped defeat the Nazis, and Tim Berners-Lee gave the world the internet.

We won the First World War and developed the radar that won us the Battle of Britain. We abolished the slave trade, defeated the Spanish Armada, held Napoleon at Waterloo, and declared war on Hitler when that seemed like a suicide mission.

We sent civilian fishing boats across the Channel to bring our boys home from Dunkirk, characteristic of the English spirit. We defied the European Union when we voted for Brexit, characteristic of our bloody-minded refusal to be told what to do by people who think they know better than us.

The language most people are using this morning to ridicule us is English, the most widely spoken language in the world.

The gifts the English have bestowed upon the world are vast and immeasurable. So you enjoy your little moment of mockery. We know who we are.
