Not the news I expected to wake up to this morning but I think this is absolutely the right time to part ways.
Steve Clarke has had some incredible moments in his time in charge, with the pinnacle being that unforgettable night against Denmark that ended our World Cup hiatus in the most spectacular way imaginable.
It’s no mean feat to have taken us through to three consecutive tournaments and into the top tier of the Nations League during his seven years in charge.
That all said, it does feel like it’s gone a bit stale and this is a perfect time for a fresh start and a reset.
There is absolutely no guarantee the next head coach will do any better of course. We currently have a lack of quality options in key areas of the team and you can’t conjure those out of thin air.
You’d also have to be concerned that the eejits that decided it was a good idea to hand Clarke a new 4 year deal before judging our performance in the States are going to be the same clowns that are trusted to pick his replacement.
As to who next, there’s not an obvious stand out Scottish candidate and personally speaking I would not be averse to a foreign appointment.
We can’t run away from that notion forever purely because of what happened under Bertie.
Hopefully a fresh approach and some new energy can squeeze that bit more out of what we have available.
@Ybairn@pieandbov Fortunate how? We won our qualifying group to get to the World Cup, and let ourselves down massively in the 3 games. I agree with the football now being stale, but there was nothing fortunate about getting the tournament
@theacciesfc Spoke about the core of the squad needing to be stronger going into this season, and that feels like one massive piece of it. Welcome back Fergus👍🏻
@theacciesfc That feels like the first part of what could be the core of the squad for next season. Here’s hoping we can build on Cian with a few retentions/additions
