Ice water rescue crews located Firefighter Bennett approximately 30 minutes later, and transported to the hospital where he was pronounced dead. Firefighter Bennett was 61, 27-year department veteran of the Camden City Fire Department, and leaves behind a wife and two children.

Firefighter Bennett was attempting to board a fire boat at the Wiggins Park Marina for a routine maintenance check when he fell into the ice covered Delaware River.

The Camden County Hero Scholarship Fund remembers two heroes who made the ultimate sacrifice on this day, March 7- Ptl. Richard Dawson, from the Pennsauken Township Police Department in 1999 and Firefighter George Jackson, from the Camden City Fire Department in 2006.
Patrolman Blackburn was struck by a hit-and-run driver as he walked his beat at the intersection of Cumberland and Atlantic Streets. He succumbed to internal injuries eight days later.
Patrolman Blackburn, who was 75 years old, had served as a Patrolman for 34 years.
