@gmhales I wish the children's commissioner would look into why black children are disproportionately coming into contact with police in the first place. Instead, it's another stop and search analysis in a vacuum, comparing search rates to general population demographics yet again
@Outcome_Code_14 Looks like Dorset Police are using stats on disproportionality by reference to general population rather than ppl in custody, coming to police notice, suspected offenders etc & not controlling for offence types. A tactic commonly used by activists to exaggerate disproportionality
@gmhales Why do these stats always refer to rates of force/searches/deaths by reference to the general population, rather than instances of police contact or number of detentions in custody? Is it intentional do you think? Is that considered standard or poor practice for statisticians?
@legalclaret Also the suggestion that police should have aimed elsewhere (torso, abdomen, arm, leg). Impracticalities aside, all of those are still lethal force. Saying 'I used lethal force but didn't think it was necessary to take a critical mass shot' is in fact murder.
@legalclaret This winds me up no end. A BLM activist was on LBC yesterday suggesting that the prosecution conspired/was intentionally set up to fail by charging murder instead of 'manslaughter' so he could get away with it
@legalclaret@muttonshunter To what extent should I put myself at risk in order to use less/mininum force? Sure, it may not be physically necessary to handcuff someone suspected of having a weapon, but it would clearly be necessary to do so in order to achieve the objective safely.
@legalclaret@muttonshunter It's interesting how College of Policing guidance refers to the 'mininum' amount of force required to achieve an objective. I feel this should be viewed in the context of how much personal risk officers are expected to take to achieve an objective?

@legalclaret Conventional restraint techniques are pretty much ineffective against anyone who isn't wholly compliant with arms outstretched saying "It's a fair cop guv".
In the real world it usually ends up looking a bit scrappy...
@echetus Agree with so much of the article
People advocating decriminalisation as a means to eliminate violent drug supply chains really think that OCGs will just close up shop and call it a day, rather than fight even more ruthlessly for diminished market share and enter new markets
@medwaymakem@gmhales No distractions allowed in our local custody, no phones, reading, or even working on your laptop. You just have to sit there and watch them for 8+ hours
@legalclaret@mrjamesob Very reductive commentary on LBC, with @ShelaghFogarty quoting these cherry-picked examples without any knowledge of the aggravating/mitigating factors which the judge considered.
