Because importing fuel weakens the rand, and fuel supply shocks are often a major driver of inflation, there is nothing but political will stopping the rand issuing state from investing hundreds of billions of rand into developing local sourced energy supply, and locally built vehicles and transport systems which operate using that local energy supply, in order to reduce the loss of forex, which the state cannot issue, resulting from importing fuel.
SA currently spends around R300 billion per year importing fuel.
