Recovering @CBSNews Foreign Affairs & State Dept Producer. Emmy-nominated. Former NYTimes London video journo; @BBCWorld producer; reporter in 🇮🇱🇵🇸2012-15.
This crucial discussion with former Iran hostages was my last CBS News production. It’s been an honor to hang my hat at this esteemed US network for the last 7 years, and to learn from legends including @margbrennan, David Martin, & Mary Walsh. I started in this profession when constant change was already the norm, so I'm not suprised and have always believed in change & innovation. Our industry needs it. Though, as a mother of two little Americans, I am also watching a budding trend where the US news industry is letting go of journalists experienced in informing the American public about their nation’s foreign policy, who've borne witness to the impact it has abroad, and how it comes full circle upon us all. It's worrying, and I hope that I am mistaken.
Pls follow the CBS Natsec team @margbrennan, @Olivia_Gazis, @JameLaporta, @ellee_watson@JenniferJJacobs to cut through the noise and stay informed. Keep watching @CBSNews.
For the at least four Americans currently being held by the Iranian regime, former Special Presidential Envoy for Hostage Affairs Roger Carstens said the Trump administration’s goal of bringing them home “might be off to the side or not necessarily coming up to fruition.”
But, he adds: “I think it's our hope that if the president lists four war objectives, that the fifth objective is getting Americans out and maybe freeing all the other people that are kept in Evin Prison. I think I've seen a list of probably just under 20, not only Americans but Europeans, as well. And I'm hopeful that whether that's an announced objective, or whether that's off to the side, I’m hopeful that that’s on his list of things to do.”
To strengthen the Democratic Republic of the Congo’s response to the Ebola outbreak, I spoke today with 🇨🇩@MinSanteRDC's @rogerkamba to confirm that the @IAEAorg, through its ZODIAC initiative, will deliver additional diagnostic equipment to ensure safe and accurate detection of the virus.
The DRC can rely on our continued and steadfast support.
Important on-the-ground reporting by @DominicWaghorn and @skyzein who meet survivors and parents of children killed by the U.S. bombing of a school in Minab. Even with mounting evidence, the Pentagon has not admitted responsibility.

We're okay. I heard a loud noise and said get down. We got under table. Secretsry Hegseth was at nearby table. His security surrounded him. I asked what is going on. He said unclear. Shortly after the cabinet was pulled

SCOOP: U.S. officials are telling some European countries to expect delays in the deliveries of some previously approved weapons as the Iran war continues to draw on weapons stockpiles, sources familiar with the matter tell @G_Slattery and me
History will judge this war not by what Trump destroyed in Iran, but by what it leaves behind: the fate of the regime, its nuclear program, its missiles and proxies—and its leverage over the Strait of Hormuz. @AC360 with @brett_mcgurk@CedricLeighton
I am thankful that we have a ceasefire. It happened much faster than I expected and it was the right move. But let’s be clear that this war ends (if the ceasefire holds) as a total strategic disaster. The scorecard
Nukes: Iran still has the HEU
Proxies: no change or impact
Missile and drones : Iran demonstrated its arsenal is sustainable and survivable under massive US and Israeli pressure.
Strait of Hormuz: Iran’s leverage to use it as a bargaining chip has dramatically increased.
Regime: killed Khameini but his son is still in place and unless they collapse in the aftermath will probably be just as strong or stronger then when this started.
US allies: totally screwed in the Gulf and horribly strained relations in Europe.
Global economy: major damage.
Israel: will be even more globally isolated after this and no more secure.
Region: as unstable as ever requiring a greater US commitment.
US capacity to be prepared for major contingencies in the IndoPacific set back for years.
But at least we took out their navy and destroyed their useless Air Force 🤷♂️. An epic strategic disaster.
Our first take on the ceasefire. It's a pause, a welcome step back from the abyss. But ignore the predictable spin from both sides: it's too early to predict what will happen next.
The negotiations in Islamabad will be complicated, to say the least, given the enormous gap between America and Iran.
If the talks fail, a renewed war is possible. But the war is deeply unpopular in America; Donald Trump is keen to have it done before he meets Xi Jinping next month; and the energy shock would likely be even greater next time. All of that is a constraint on Trump's ability to start another round.
The other option is that we go back to a version of the pre-war status quo: a battered Iran still under sanctions and the threat of further attack, sitting on a stockpile of 400kg of highly-enriched uranium. https://t.co/qU5wtzHGG9
