Wednesday before dawn, Austin police say DeMario Jones broke into a South Austin home, walked right into a bedroom, and got shot by the homeowner.

Homeowner cooperated, went home, no charges.

Good.

Now the part the evening news left out.

Travis County jail records show this same man was booked Sept. 9 on two felonies, criminal mischief and theft.

The mischief charge got dismissed.

The theft got him a 120-day sentence on Sept. 17, and the records show he walked out that same day.

The same day.

Six days later he's standing in a stranger's bedroom at 4 a.m.

Somebody explain to me how a 120-day sentence turns into a same-day release.

That homeowner had to make a split-second call the courthouse had over a week to make.
