The internet is no longer forever. You need to become your own archivist for whatever you are passionate about, because at some point this decade there is going to be a major purge and I strongly suspect >80% of global digital content will simply disappear.
the buzzfeedification of manspreading to the point where using the term unironically makes you a laughing stock haunts and wounds me. the concept still holds up!!
not to be too “sometimes…depends” but very obnoxious type of guy emerging is people who respond to any kind of annoyance or concern about public behaviour with “you have to put up with it! that’s what sharing a public space is about!” re: EVERYTHING
seems mighty convenient that this reaction is also gaining ground when there’s also right wing pushback to basic feminist ideas about how cis men take ownership of physical space and what this means for women’s safety (with appropriate caveats about white women tears and terfs)
Starting to think that the nastiest pieces of work on this app are the train aficionados who’ll just go “rules are rules” and refuse to acknowledge that the average person does not have the same intricate knowledge of regulation, price patterns, or T&Cs, nor should they need to
“Actually if you book a ticket to visit your unexpectedly ill friend in November on the 4th Thursday in July and break up your journey in Shittington and Crewe your ticket is only £80, but you can’t use your railcard on the first leg” I am going to wedgie you to the moon and back
@bigdybbukenergy My life got exponentially better since I stopped & started pushing through my comfort zone, but it makes me very uncomfortable thinking about how online communities facilitated this & how hard it is to raise when things like benefits being cut bc of that stigma are more pressing
@bigdybbukenergy I don’t like to talk about it bc I know the irl impact of stigma about disabled people being lazy, but I was sooo guilty age 18-23 of weaponising disabilities as an excuse not to do hard things
When I was a kid all I wanted to do was grow up. Read grown-up books, watch grown-up films, speak and live like a grown-up. I rarely encounter that attitude among my own students, relatives, contemporaries. If you think age has nothing to offer but burdens, why bother living?
Hahahaha he must have been a member of the party back when we might have cared about making anything even incrementally better before we smeared the guy whose leadership made the party seem like it could be a vehicle for any sort of good and chased him out of public life hahahaha
My brother stepped up when my mum was in her last months. But the amount of times where I was the default person for calls re: her from health and social services etc. Especially with the expectation that I could drop my job and fly from London to Belfast at the drop of a hat
I did what I could and made it work, but it still rankles that there were periods where there seemed to be no effort made to engage with my (at the time) student nurse brother because there was an eldest daughter knocking about - despite having both our contact details
(And to note that I expect that public services being fucked + deprivation + the decimation of health services and wider support systems + LA funding + social fabric collapsing all combined are all the most significant things which are why anecdotal experience above is happening)
Now that it’s died down a bit, I’m willing to bite the bullet and say that I don’t think banning public smoking more widely is an awful idea (even if I doubt that the Labour policy will be the best way as opposed to upstream prevention)
Preemptively emphasising that I’m not pro-Labour’s specific policies on this, but that we shouldn’t underestimate smoking and second hand smoke especially from a leftist health justice perspective 🙏🏻
