The whole Civil War thing really pushed him into the forefront for better or worse, and few years later the MCU really made him mainstream

Sure, he had his stories and important roles as one of the founding members, but in terms of sales and popularity he couldn't really hold a candle to Wolverine, Spider-Man and Hulk e.g. He became much more iconic during civil war
