Firefighters battled a fully engulfed bungalow yesterday afternoon in the 5900 block of Prince of Wales Drive.
At approximately 15:07, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received multiple 9-1-1 calls reporting that a single-family bungalow was completely on fire. The initial caller, a neighbour, reported that âthe whole house is on fire,â which was confirmed by subsequent callers.
Firefighters arrived on scene within three minutes of dispatch and confirmed heavy fire conditions, with flames venting through the roof. Two occupants had safely evacuated prior to our arrival and were assessed by our partners at @OttawaParamedic.
Crews immediately encountered significant hazards. An arcing powerline had burned through and fallen at the front of the home, creating a dangerous condition. During suppression efforts, a second live hydro line also came down, adding to the risks on scene.
Firefighters advanced multiple hose lines around the structure to conduct a defensive attack. As the area does not have fire hydrants, tanker trucks were used to shuttle water from a nearby source to sustain firefighting operations.
Due to the extensive fire involvement throughout the home, crews were unable to make entry to conduct interior searches. The occupants confirmed they were the only two people inside at the time of the fire.
An aerial ladder was deployed to attack the fire from above. The fire was declared under control at 18:10.
An excavator was later brought in to assist with overhaul operations, allowing Firefighters to access and extinguish remaining hot spots and prevent flare-ups.
An @OttFire Investigator was dispatched to determine the cause and origin of the fire. #OttNews

Today one of our Sector Chiefs encountered an 11-year-old skating on unsafe ice at Mahogany Landing in Manotick and asked him to leave due to open water.
Weâve seen many community groups raise concerns about kids on unsafe ice.
Please stay off the ice.

Our Structural Collapse Team was dispatched after a vehicle struck a home yesterday afternoon in #Ottawa.
Â
At approximately 16:46, the Ottawa Fire Services Communications Division received a call from our partners at @OttawaPolice requesting assistance for a vehicle that had driven into a home in the 100 block of Queen Mary Street. Firefighters arrived on scene four minutes after being dispatched and confirmed a cargo van had driven through a cedar hedge and into the garage of a two-storey single-family home.
Â
The driver, who was the only occupant of the van, was not trapped and was able to  exit the vehicle. Crews shut off the vehicle, entered the home to check for any hazards, and confirmed that no residents were inside after speaking with the homeowner who arrived shortly after.
Â
Structural damage was identified on the west side of the garage and the house. The Structural Collapse Team was dispatched to evaluate the damage and found that a central I-beam was no longer supported after the van had pushed out a two-ply 2x4 post. The team inspected the interior and confirmed there was no additional damage to the main structure or the second floor above the garage.
Crews used cribbing and two large 4x4 wedges to support the I-beam until the van could be removed. Once the vehicle was cleared, a two-post T-shore was installed to provide proper support for the beam. A City of Ottawa engineer was called to the scene, and hydro crews disconnected power to the home as a safety precaution. Caution tape was placed around the garage area before we cleared the scene. #OttNews
