A new study from The Wistar Institute shows that fructose, a common dietary sugar, can act as a chemical signal that helps aggressive ovarian cancer cells spread.

Researchers found that cancer cells surviving chemotherapy do not simply become inactive. Instead, they release fructose that signals nearby tumor cells. This signal reduces cholesterol production inside those neighboring cells. Cholesterol normally helps hold tumor cells together like a biological glue. When cholesterol levels drop, the bonds weaken, allowing cells to detach and spread through the abdominal cavity. This process accounts for roughly 90 percent of deaths from the disease.

The findings, published in Nature Aging, also raise questions about diet and medications. High-fructose corn syrup can make up a significant portion of daily calories for some people in the United States. In preclinical models, elevated dietary fructose encouraged cancer spread even without chemotherapy. Because statins lower cholesterol and are used by millions of Americans, researchers note that these drugs might produce a similar effect on cellular bonds. Experts stress that patients should not change prescribed medications based on this research alone.

The work points to new directions for studying how nutrition and cholesterol-lowering treatments may interact with cancer therapies.
