We pray this Easter series has been a blessing, and wish you and your family a wonderful Easter!
The unbelievers recalled Jesus’ prediction that He would rise again. If Jesus’ body was stolen, the Pharisees and priests would lose face and standing with the people. So they convinced Pilate to seal the tomb and keep it guarded.
Jesus was feeling abandonment, despair, and separation from His Father that He’d never known. In becoming sin, the Father divinely and judicially turned away from His beloved Son. Then, Jesus cried out, “It is finished,” bowed His head, and gave up His spirit.
Rulers sneered; soldiers tortured, mocked, and cast lots for His clothing; and a criminal dying next to Him launched insults.
Despite an unbelievably excruciating and agonizingly slow death, nailed to a cross wearing a crown of thorns, Jesus was the forgiving Messiah!
Pontius Pilate had washed his hands of the matter. Several in the crowd recognized Peter as having been with Jesus, but Peter denied any association. Hearing the rooster’s crow, he knew he’d failed Jesus. In shame, he departed weeping, fully aware he’d denied his Lord.
This was the clearest statement of Jesus’ deity. His declaration was clearly understood by the high priest, who declared that He had spoken blasphemy. There was no further need for witnesses, for the Lord’s lips revealed His guilt and fate before the Sanhedrin.
Judas approached Jesus, saying, "Hail, Rabbi!" and kissed Him. Fully aware of Judas’ role in fulfilling His Father’s will, Jesus’ simple reply was, “Friend, do what you have come for.” Even now, with His horrible death just hours away, Jesus still loved him!
Jesus was so distressed in His prayers that He broke out in a sweat of blood. His sorrow was not in fear of man or the horrific torment of the cross; rather, within hours, the cup of divine fury against sin would be His to drink, separating Him from the Father.
Peter refused to believe that he could ever forsake Jesus. In expressing the feeling of all the disciples, they would never betray Him, so how could they possibly ever deny Him? Yet, they were just hours away from fulfilling Jesus’ prophecy.
Simon Peter was indignant that Jesus would stoop to washing his feet. He failed to see beyond the humble service itself to the symbolism of spiritual cleansing.
Unless the Lamb of God cleanses a person's sin, one can have no part with Him. #HumbleServant
Foot washing was necessary in such dusty conditions, where people wore sandals without socks or stockings. Such was typically performed by the lowliest of servants. The disciples were astonished at Jesus’ remarkable role reversal. #SymbolicOfSpiritualCleansing
Jesus knew He was to suffer and die. The bread symbolized His body, yet unbroken, to be the sacrifice for all. His blood, not yet spilled, represents the New Covenant— a covenant that could not be achieved through the law but in receiving His grace. #AtoningDeath
The approaching death of Christ would fulfill the symbolism of the Passover meal, which was both a memorial of the deliverance of God’s people from Egypt and a prophetic type of sacrifice.
The disciples did not comprehend His words. #LambOfGod#Propitiation
