A Loyal Servant Till the Last Day: The Story of Major GU Bukar
Some soldiers are remembered for the battles they fought. Others are remembered for the leaders they helped shape. Major GU Bukar belongs to both categories.
An alumnus of the prestigious Nigerian Military School (NMS), Zaria, where he enrolled in 1997, Bukar's military journey has been defined by discipline, loyalty, and quiet professionalism. After completing his education at NMS, he enlisted into the Nigerian Army in 2003 before proceeding to the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA) as a member of Short Service Combatant Course 39. In 2011, he was commissioned as a Second Lieutenant into the Infantry Corps, beginning a career built on courage and service.
As an infantry officer, Major Bukar has undergone some of the Army's most demanding professional courses, including the
✓Young Officers' Course,
✓Company Commanders' Course, ✓Special Warfare Course,
✓Junior Staff Course at the Armed Forces Command and Staff College, and
✓Specialized Counter-T£rrorism and Intelligence training.
These courses prepared him for operational and leadership responsibilities in some of Nigeria's most sensitive military formations.
Throughout his career, he has served with distinction as a
✓Platoon Commander at the 72 Special Forces Battalion,
✓Staff Officer at the 7 Guards Battalion,
✓Staff Officer at the Nigerian Army Resource Centre,
✓ADC to the General Officers Commanding 1 Division and 82 Division, and
✓Company Commander/Adjutant at the Presidential Guards Brigade.
His most notable appointment came as the Aide-de-Camp (ADC) to the 23rd Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Taoreed Abiodun Lagbaja. More than serving as a military aide, Bukar became one of the officers who worked closest to the late Army Chief, earning widespread admiration for his professionalism, loyalty, and dedication. Following General Lagbaja's passing in 2024, his heartfelt tribute revealed the deep respect and mentorship they shared, offering Nigerians a rare glimpse into the human side of military leadership.
Major GU Bukar represents a generation of officers who prove that true leadership is not measured only by rank, but by character, humility, and unwavering commitment to duty. His journey from the parade grounds of the Nigerian Military School to the corridors of Army Headquarters reflects the values that continue to define the finest traditions of the Nigerian Army.
