When HYBE acquired the U.S. entertainment company Ithaca, the domestic media hyped it up, calling it "sharing a table with Justin Bieber" and "a stepping stone for global expansion."

Ithaca's actual net assets were 70 billion won. The amount HYBE paid was 1.2 trillion won. And that's not the end of it. They even took on 120 billion won in debt that the previous owner, Scooter Braun, was supposed to repay.

Scooter Braun had bought Taylor Swift's album copyrights with borrowed money and then sold them off. He pocketed half the sale proceeds, leaving the debt behind. That debt is what HYBE ended up shouldering.
