One Night Only (🌟🌟) is horrendous. Shame on me for having any expectations of any kind before seeing this because “disappointment” would be an understatement. I’m going to spend the next however many words telling you precisely why this movie is a flaming piece of ass, but all of it boils down to the fact that One Night Only is guilty of Cinema’s cardinal sin: it’s boring. It’s slow. Uneventful. Predictable. The acting is totally forgettable. The script is borderline meaningless. And the story is just totally flimsy. I wear the same watch to every single movie & I was looking at that very watch to see when this film was over more than I actually cared to look at the screen. One Night Only is boring as hell. 

The story is absurd but simple. As I mentioned, the government has outlawed premarital sex year round except for one night only where unmarried couples are free to jump each other’s bones to their heart’s content. Every person has a color-changing biometric-reading government-issued tattoo, which creates a monitoring system so complex it would swallow the rest of the review if I tried to explain it. The more you think about the concept and the effort it must take to carry it out, the more it falls apart. But again, I’m not here to critique the world of the movie. I’m here to critique the movie.

Our star crossed lovers are Allie (Monica Barbaro) and Owen (Callum Turner), both unmarried and excited to make the most of their one night. When Owen’s girlfriend stands him up to use her night to explore elsewhere and Allie’s friend ditches her to hook up with a guy she meets in line for the bar bathroom, the two take to the streets and find themselves interwoven in the classic romcom story that teases us about an ending we can all see coming a mile away. The problem I have is that the entire plot that exists to keep this couple separated is so rudimentary and repetitive that it makes the whole film unenjoyable. Ignoring the fact that we all know this couple will wind up together in some capacity by the time the credits roll, each obstacle thrown in their path is frustratingly routine. Owen or Allie meet someone who, at face value seems relatively normal and as safe an option as any, only for them to shortly be revealed as a criminal, psychopath, or psychopathic criminal. It happens 3 or 4 times in a row. Rinse & repeat. It is exhausting. 

If the film has a saving grace, it’s Monica Barbaro, who manages to deliver a good performance with the rough material she is given. It’s like watching Mike Trout bang homers for the last-place Angels. In an outlandish and frustrating world, she genuinely seems like a real person who is fed up with the system and just trying to get by. She serves as a grounding presence and you can see why audiences are meant to identify and sympathize with her character. 

The same cannot be said of Callum Turner. I don’t know what it is about this movie and his performance, but absolutely none of it works for me. His chemistry with Barbaro is non-existent. His chipper outlook on life feels totally phoned in. His comedic timing is painful. His line-delivery physically made me squirm. His sections of the movie are the roughest to get through. Perhaps a more charismatic leading man could have helped this movie limp to a more decent review, but his work here leaves a lot to be desired. A future Bond? James Bond? 007??? Vodka martini shaken not stirred??? That guy? No. Please no. Dear god, no. 

At day’s end, I look forward to seeing Monica Barbaro deliver strong performances in better movies. As for this one? I think one night only was more than enough.
