In the early 1990s, Brazilian photojournalist Sebastião Ribeiro Salgado was stationed in Rwanda to cover the genocide, an experience that left him traumatized.

In 1994, upon returning to his home in Minas Gerais, Brazil, Sebastião hoped to find solace in the lush green forest of his childhood. Instead, he discovered that his home had transformed into a dusty, barren land stretching for miles, devoid of any wildlife.

"The land was as sick as I was. Only about 0.5% of the land was covered in trees," he remarked. At this time, his wife, Lélia Deluiz Wanick Salgado, proposed that they embark on the ambitious journey of replanting the entire forest.

Sebastião supported the idea, and together, over the course of the next 20 years, they planted an astonishing 2.7 million trees.

Their efforts resulted in the rejuvenation of 1,500 acres of rainforest, and the site eventually became home to 293 plant species, 172 bird species, and 33 animal species, some of which were on the brink of extinction.

In 1856, a 19-year-old pregnant woman by the name of Mary Ann Brown Patten took command of an American merchant vessel named Neptune's Car when the captain (her husband) developed tuberculosis and fell into a coma.

Usually in such a case, the first mate would have assumed command of the vessel. However, the first mate had been locked up in his cabin after it was discovered that he had been purposely slowing down the vessel because he had taken bets on a competitor vessel. As for the second mate, he was an illiterate man who was unable to navigate.

For 56 days, Mary Ann took the helm of Neptune's Car and was able to bring it safely to San Francisco despite a mutiny to overthrow her. During the voyage, the first mate demanded that Mary Ann release him immediately and reinstate him as commander of the vessel. However, she refused. The first mate then tried to instigate a mutiny, but Mary Ann was able to convince the crew to stick by her side and eventually won their unanimous support.

Mary Ann did not change her clothes for 50 days and during her spare time, studied medicine in order to take care of her husband. While his health never fully recovered, Mary Ann managed to keep him alive for the duration of the trip.

When the insurers of the ship rewarded Mary Ann with a $1,000 gift, she replied in a letter that she was doing "only the plain duty of a wife."

Hedy Lamarr was a Hollywood actress in the 1940s and 1950s, and she was considered "the most beautiful woman in the world" during her time. She began her acting career in Austria and became notorious for being the first woman to simulate an orgasm on screen in 1933. It was during this time that she also got married to Friedrich Mandl, a Vienna-based arms dealer with ties to Mussolini and later Hitler.

The marriage did not last long. In her own words, she wrote, "I knew very soon that I could never be an actress while I was his wife... He was the absolute monarch in his marriage... I was like a doll. I was like a thing, some object of art which had to be guarded and imprisoned, having no mind, no life of its own." According to her autobiography, she disguised herself as one of the maids and managed to flee to Paris. Others say she convinced her husband to wear all of her jewelry for a dinner party and then disappeared afterwards.

She eventually booked a liner to New York, where she met the head of MGM, who was impressed enough to offer her a $500-a-week contract to work as an actress. In 1938, she arrived in Hollywood and went on to star in several movies, working with the likes of Clark Gable and James Stewart.

Beyond her acting career, Lamarr was also a scientist and co-patented spread-spectrum technology during World War II to prevent the Nazis from jamming navy torpedoes. However, her invention was rejected and wouldn't be implemented until the Cold War in 1962. The technology would eventually be used in developing Wi-Fi and Bluetooth technology.

This 88ft deep well is located on the land of Quinta da Regaleira, near the town of Sintra, Portugal. The well was never used as a well and, in fact, was never built to serve as a water resource at all. It was actually built for secret ceremonial purposes. It has a spiral staircase of 27m to the bottom.

Initiation Well looks like an inverted tower. It is either a journey into depths of Mother Earth or a rise up into light. Well represents death/rebirth allegory, typical within many mystical traditions. Journey through well is like a rebirth through Mother Earth’s womb.

Now, Initiation Well in Quinta da Regaleira Park, Sintra, Portugal, under UNESCO Protection.
