Trade: the Raiders are sending QB Geno Smith and a 2026 7th-round pick to the New York Jets in exchange for a 2026 6th-round pick, per ESPN sources. Smith returns to the team for which he started his NFL career for in 2013.
🌸 D.C.’s cherry blossoms may take their time this year.
After the chilliest winter in more than two decades, the trees are just beginning to wake up. Warm weather this week should kick-start development, but cooler conditions later in March may slow the progression toward peak bloom.
📅 Our forecast: April 3–7 for peak bloom at the Tidal Basin.
That would be the latest since 2018 and notably later than last year’s March 28 peak.
Over the past century, peak bloom has shifted about a week earlier on average because of climate warming — but this year looks like a throwback to a later bloom.
Trade news: The Boston Red Sox are acquiring third baseman Caleb Durbin in a trade with the Milwaukee Brewers, sources tell ESPN. Left-hander Kyle Harrison is headlining the three-player package headed back to Milwaukee.
Frequently asked question: Why does my weather app say that I’m getting 20-30 inches of snow?
This one is a pretty straightforward answer.
Most phone weather apps rely completely or heavily on automated output from one or a few computer models. Those models spit out exact numbers — even when there is a significant degree of uncertainty in the forecast — that often fluctuate throughout the day, even by the hour.
Human meteorologists, on the other hand, compare multiple models, account for known model biases, and know which models are best for which weather situations and time ranges. They also factor in local nuances that models can’t resolve, and try to filter the model fluctuations out of the forecast.
Don’t get us wrong. Weather apps can be useful and convenient to plan your day or week when the weather is quiet, or when there is particularly high confidence in inclement weather within a day or two.
But when the weather gets more complicated — especially as complex as predicting snow, sleet, freezing rain, and the dividing lines between them — nothing beats the expertise and local knowledge of an actual human meteorologist.
