I understand what you’re saying, and I am very much an Emmitt Smith admirer. And this is an all time old head barroom debate.

My counter:

1. Although Smith still had to execute, his prime was bolstered massively by one of the greatest offensive lines of all time. This is of course the hypothetical you talked about, but I think most are confident if you switched Smith and Sanders O lines, Barry would be the all time rushing leader by a decent margin

2. Smith played longer. Best ability is availability, credit to Smith. But after being stuck on the Lions his whole career, and their refusal to finally trade him, Barry retired after a 1500 yard season. This dude AVERAGED 1500 yards and 11 TDs behind that trash line.

3. Dallas was the best team in football. The lions were consistently not. So often times Detroit was down big and down early, forcing them into a more pass heavy offense. Also teams knew they could load the box vs Barry, whereas Emmitt had Irvin and Harper and Novacek etc.

4. Daryl Johnston is one of the best fullbacks to play. Huge help to a running back. Wayne Fontes didn’t use a FB, and that’s Barry’s first 8 years. When Bobby Ross took over and put in Schlesinger, Barry went for over TWO thousand yards, and here’s the kicker- he had 55 yards COMBINED in the first two games of the year adjusting to a fullback.

Conclusion:

Give Barry Emmitt’s O-Line and total package, and throw Smith onto the Lions (hypothetical), logic dictates HEAVILY that Barry would be the clear cut winner. It’s a great lesson in how team and scheme can mean so much to a career, especially when you rely so much on those things in football, which isn’t just individual performance.

One final note: I’m gonna take a wild swing and say you might also be a Cowboy fan :)

I got no dog in the fight, but I saw them both come out of college and I am at peace with Barry being the better RB, and Emmitt being the more accomplished.

@CarmichaelDave Barry Sanders was one of the greatest pure runners ever, but the record book is not hypothetical. Emmitt owns the records, and with how teams now split carries and manage running backs, they may stand for a very long time.
