Gaza. Another deadly day.
If, as Israel keeps saying, its strikes against Hamas combatants surrounded by civilians, including children, are within the contours of international law - then there’s something deeply wrong about international law.
And if, as many of us fear, war crimes are being committed in Gaza in our name - then woe betide us.
Regardless of the fact that Hamas is even more criminal, willingly sacrificing its own innocents, woe betide us.
In other modern countries, rogue governments have dragged their nations into war crimes and even genocide; but those countries were (ironically) saved by total defeat, and their nations were able to rebuild and heal them.
The case of Israel is different. If we are militarily defeated, we’re all dead. No chance of recovery.
I still don’t believe that Israel is conducting genocide. Crimes, alas, yes.
And I still believe that Israelis can heal Israel, with a strong push from well-intended members of the global community.
But tonight I think of Gaza, and my heart is achingly heavy. Woe betide us all.
