A man in Canada met up with a doctor at a Tim Horton’s. Not for coffee, but to discuss the option of MAID. The man was suffering from Crohn's disease and depression. The doctor 'evaluated' him outside the coffee shop in a parking lot and decided he was a candidate for MAID.

But here's the even crazier part that I haven't heard the media talk about.

After texting the patient a personal euthanasia plan, the doctor DROVE the man to an industrial morgue, injected him, and killed him. Paperwork done. On to the next one.

This is SICKENING, Canada.

THIS INCIDENT SHOULD CONCERN EVERY ALBERTAN, WHETHER YOU SUPPORT THE PETITION OR NOT

A canvasser was in public, lawfully collecting signatures, when a man approached as if he wanted to sign, then allegedly grabbed the petition papers and ran. She reported it to police.

What matters here is not just the theft. It is what this kind of act says. When people stop trusting themselves to win through debate, some try to interfere with the process instead. That is when disagreement turns into contempt for democratic participation.

THIS WAS AN ACT OF COWARDICE!

If you oppose a petition, THEN OPENLY OPPOSE IT WITH YOUR WORDS. Make your case. Debate it. But do not interfere with other people’s lawful right to participate.

THE ANSWER TO SPEECH YOU DISLIKE IS MORE SPEECH, NOT THEFT AND INTIMIDATION!

Please share the video. But don't accuse random people online without evidence. Innocent people should not have their reputations damaged by reckless speculation. If you truly have useful information, report it directly to police.

While preparing for a brief on the independence petition due tomorrow, I came across this from the Supreme Court of Canada that is worth sharing:

“The right of the people to discuss and debate ideas forms the very foundation of democracy… For this reason, the Supreme Court of Canada has assiduously protected the right of each citizen to participate in political debate...

Permitting an effective voice for unpopular and minority views — views political parties may not embrace — is essential to deliberative democracy. The goal should be to bring the views of all citizens into the political arena for consideration, be they accepted or rejected at the end of the day. Free speech in the public square may not be curtailed merely because one might find the message unappetizing or the messenger distasteful…

The ability to engage in effective speech in the public square means nothing if it does not include the ability to attempt to persuade one’s fellow citizens through debate and discussion. This is the kernel from which reasoned political discourse emerges.

Freedom of expression must allow a citizen to give voice to her vision for her community and nation, to advocate change through the art of persuasion in the hope of improving her life and indeed the larger social, political and economic landscape…

Freedom of expression protects not only the individual who speaks the message, but also the recipient. Members of the public — as viewers, listeners and readers — have a right to information on public governance, absent which they cannot cast an informed vote.”

These are words from the Supreme Court of Canada that recognize the importance of debate and discussion, even when the views are unpopular, uncomfortable, or distasteful.

So when someone tries to shut down the conversation, shame you, or tell you certain topics should not even be discussed, remind them of that.

The answer is not silence or suppression.

A petition, a debate, even a controversial idea, these are not failures of the system. They are expressions of it.

The real risk is when we start deciding which views are acceptable to be heard.

Because once that line starts moving, it does not stop where you think it will.

So the question is:

Are we prepared to actually live this principle or do we only support it when we agree with the message?

Because the more you know and understand, the more effectively you can participate, ask better questions, and actually effect change.

Tell me this is a political issue, not a legal one, without telling me. 🤔

A citizen initiative petition is launched under Alberta’s Citizen Initiative Act, one of the few mechanisms ordinary people have to bring an issue directly to the public.

What happens next?

Press conferences demanding that Danielle Smith resign. Letters pleading for Mark Carney to step in. A visit to King Charles. Then the so-called “historic” non-confidence vote with the NDP, which nothing short of a complete nothing burger, along with a disruptive spectacle at the Legislature.

And yet Mr. Sylvestre is the one forced into court to defend the petition.

If this were truly about the law, the process would simply run its course. Instead, every political lever imaginable is being pulled to stop citizens from even putting the question to the public.

In a democracy, citizen initiatives exist precisely so the public can participate directly in decisions that affect them. The real question is whether those democratic tools will be respected or whether they will be blocked whenever the outcome becomes politically inconvenient.

In a healthy democracy, we challenge ideas with debate and let the public decide. But when every effort is made to stop citizens from even asking the question, it starts to look a lot less like democracy and a lot more like control.
