The odd thing is Sabirah, I genuinely don’t think they wonder. I don’t think it even crosses their minds. I don’t think they actually care. Which, in and of itself, is a massive problem.

I’ve worked in communications and media for more than two decades. I know plenty of people in journalism who’ll sit firmly on the fence because they genuinely believe it keeps them in with both sides of a story or scandal. They’re terrified of rubbing the wrong person up the wrong way and losing a contact, so they bend whichever way keeps that door open. They’ll be overly optimistic and protective of one side when it suits them, then turn around and be critical of that exact same side when that suits them. Or just one side, every single time, with Ship. He’s the Sussex propagandist-in-chief by an absolute mile. And let’s be honest, it’s not just him. His entire outlet is cut from the same cloth.

At some point, maintaining access becomes more important than actually doing the job. They stop questioning what they’re being told because they don’t want to upset the person feeding them information. So they repeat what they’re given, push the line they’ve been handed and knowingly put keeping their contacts happy ahead of being honest with their audience.

It’s one of the reasons I started my own PR firm. I can choose the clients I actually want to help rather than being stuck representing people I don’t believe in. Of course, sometimes you still have to begrudgingly clean up a bloody stupid mess someone has created for themselves. That’s PR. But I’m not going to chuck my morals and values out the window because someone is paying me.

That’s what I find so disgraceful about Matt, Chris and the whole bloody lot of them. They seem perfectly comfortable manipulating their readers or viewers if it keeps their contacts happy. And once you’re willing to shape what your audience is being told because you’re frightened of losing access, you’ve got a credibility problem.

Your contacts shouldn’t control your journalism. Your fear of losing them shouldn’t control it either.

And watching people willingly blur that line is gross.
