I FAILED MY 3RD MBBS 3-TIMES, PASSED AT THE 4TH ATTEMPT. But that wasn't the only thing that happened during that period. Something else happened. I stumbled on an idea that would eventually become CASAIPAY. At the time, I was going through one of the most difficult periods of my medical school journey. I had failed my 3rd MBBS examination, and I was preparing to take it again. There was a lot going on mentally. But one thing I had always done was study how transactions and financial technology were evolving in China. It had almost become a normal ritual for me. I would spend time watching how people make payments, how businesses operate, how technology removes friction from everyday transactions, how money moves, and how financial services can become almost invisible in people's daily lives. Then, during that period, I traveled home and visited my village. And something clicked. I started looking around my community and how people carry cash,complain about low internet connectivity etc. I asked myself... 'Why can't we build something that makes accessing and moving money this easy for people here?' Then the thought became even bigger. What if someone didn't need to remember a bank account number to receive money? What if someone didn't need to own a Point-of-sale(POS)? What if poor network connectivity didn't completely stop someone from accessing their money? What if your individual identity could become your financial credential? What if someone could access their money anytime, anywhere, even in communities where network connectivity is unreliable? I started thinking. Why can't we build this for my community? Then for Nigeria. Then for Africa. That was where the idea that eventually became CASAIPAY started taking shape. The vision became simple. Build financial infrastructure that makes it easier for people to access and move their money using their identity, while designing for the realities of underserved communities,including places where network connectivity can be extremely unreliable. My 3rd MBBS failure didn't suddenly make me a medicopreneur. But the period surrounding that failure gave me the time, discomfort and perspective to look at problems differently. Today, I'm still in medical school. Yes,I have passed that 3rd MBBS phase. And I'm still building CASAIPAY. Sometimes I wonder. If that difficult season had never happened, would I have stumbled upon this idea? I don't know. But I know what happened next. A thought I had while in my room became a conversation with Deborah Enu our COO. The conversation came alive with Richard Peter our CTO. The research became a concept with Alo Odefa HRS. The concept became a team. And today, we're still building. Maybe that's one of the strange things about life. Sometimes, what looks like a setback can put you in the exact environment where your next big idea finds you. CASAIPAY is still only getting started. The story is far from over.
