Mikko Rantanen scores the first-ever hat trick in the third period of a #Game7 in NHL history! #StanleyCup
Hat Trick Challenge presented by @AstraZenecaUS
After arguably the worst, most painful, and most catastrophic self-inflicted freefall season in the history of professional sports — at least it’s finally over.
@TheSteinLine’s 77 stages of grief feels so very real right now as I type this out wearing the first piece of Lakers merch I’ve ever owned and count the minutes til @espn_macmahon’s article drops on Monday morning.
Sports offers such a beautiful escape from the real world. What Dirk gave our city — his health, 21 years of loyalty, selfless salary discounts, integrity, class, compassion, philanthropy, foil-wrapped hot plates, all-star games, playoff wins, awesome Holger moments, work ethic, leadership, an MVP, a Finals MVP, a Larry O, a Freddie Mercury impression, a flu game, a Flula song, an And-One in San Antonio, a series of transformational haircuts, game winners, buzzer beaters, hilarious tweets, a 50-40-90 membership, endless Jumbotron bits, one-legged fadeaways, rainbow threes, a handful of dunks, :), hours and hours and hours of time at children’s hospitals, kindness, humility, a massively impressive individual standing in NBA history, the endless, tireless and relentless pursuit of his goals, the best episode of Punk’d, an unforgettable final home game, his amazingly heartfelt reaction to finally winning it all, 31,560 points and a gorgeous statue that perfectly states “Loyalty Never Fades Away” with 21 letters for 21 seasons — is all incredibly meaningful to us in ways that transcend sports.
He’s ours. Forever. The whole world wanted him, and for very good reason, but no chance — he was ours. And that’s exactly why this is his city. And always will be.
And before he officially hung up his Nikes because it was simply too painful to play — he gave us one more gift. A baton passing. He let a young Jedi ride shotgun with him on a farewell tour that perfectly demonstrated exactly what a phenomenal career combined with undying loyalty to one city looks like.
That’s why 77 and 41 feel so linked to us. In your lifetime as a fan of any NBA franchise you would be extremely fortunate to have even one of these in intergalactic unicorns on the team you love. In Dallas, we witnessed a handoff. That’s like seeing Bigfoot riding the Loch Ness monster in Area 51. It simply doesn’t happen.
I think that’s why I’ve been so heartbroken. Is it really possible for a trade to break your heart?
1.Denial – This is a fake Sham’s account.
2.Anger – Who on Earth would let this happen?
3.Bargaining – OK, AD @ the 4 with Kai running the show. It’s a much, much shorter window. But look at this dominant half vs the Rockets in AD’s first game! Ok. Ok. Wait. Oh dear. Is AD hurt?
4.Depression – Tears falling from Kai’s face. Yep. Mine too. Tears falling from Luka’s face. Yep. Mine too.
5.Acceptance – We were just in the NBA Finals, led by a 25-yr old generational global icon averaging 34/10/9 and now Johnny Cash won’t stop singing ‘Hurt’.
I think it’s safe to say that we are all completely devastated. But I did witness one thing that was really cool in all of this. And that is watching so many people that work for the Mavericks who likely felt the exact same way yet still went out there and did an exceptional job. From players, to coaches, to broadcasters, to team employees from all different departments. None of those folks asked for this yet had to go out there and keep doing their jobs at a very high-level. It was an incredibly impressive show of professionalism in my opinion.
And so… we wait for Monday morning and keep listening to Johnny Cash.
Sending all Mavs fans love and hugs. Good talk. See you out there.

As @TheSteinLine wrote in November, Johann Bilsborough became Dallas' director of player health and performance this season.
He replaced highly regarded Casey Smith, who worked closely with Dirk Nowitxki and Jason Kidd as players as well as Luka Dončić: https://t.co/ej9VrEPx7G
Luka Dončić on Mavs GM Nico Harrison repeating his “defense wins championships” line during his closed media session:
“It’s just sad the way he’s talking right now…”
On if he intended to finish his career in Dallas: “Of course, that’s an easy question.” #MFFL

Did last night help any of you find any closure? I fear that it was merely gas on the fire for me.
I now doubt that I will ever fully understand how we traded a 25-year old global icon. Dude is a one-of-one. A cold-blooded killer who rises to the occasion. A sweet young kid with a heart of gold chasing a dream in a foreign land.
A trick shot god. A basketball warlock who makes the impossible routine. Unguardable. The bigger the moment, the bigger the coconuts. Neo in the Matrix. Luke Skywalker. You don’t trade that, you build a franchise around that. The whole city thrives on that. You own the globe with that — potentially for two decades.
I honestly don’t believe I’ll ever fully be able to process this. It’s not getting better with time. I don’t even really know what to compare it to. Maybe it would be like the Cowboys trading Troy, Emmitt, Michael, recently acquired DE Charles Haley AND Jimmy Johnson for 30-yr old Bruce Smith in 1992.
There’s literally nothing like it. Ever. In the history of sports. Maybe in the history of the word “trade”.
Anyone have any suggestion of how to get over this and move on? If so, please notify the elite team of therapists working around the clock to restore my inner soul. I love you all.
PS — wishing Kyrie the speediest recovery ever. I love that dude with all my heart. Good talk. See you out there.
