Welles Crowther was a former Boston College lacrosse player whose trademark was a red bandana.
On September 11, 2001, he led people to safety after terrorists struck the World Trade Center.
This is his story.
.@DougGhim leads halfway through the John Deere Classic, which would be a fitting place for the 29-year-old Ghim to finally win his first PGA Tour title.
Ghim grew up less than 3 hours from TPC Deere Run, in Arlington Heights, Illinois, the son of Jeff and Susan Ghim, both Korean immigrants.
He first learned the game hitting balls in the family’s backyard, into the makeshift hitting bay that Jeff had constructed out of metal piping. Jeff, who was a single-digit handicap before three back surgeries, was also his son’s instructor. The Ghims didn’t belong to a fancy country club, so Doug would spend hours after school either at Twin Lakes, a nine-hole executive course where the driving range was, well, a lake, or the nicer Arboretum Club, which had a good twilight rate.
Jeff didn’t let Doug play tournament golf until he was 12 years old, until he felt that his son was ready physically and mentally to compete. Doug, with financial help from the AJGA's ACE Grant program, eventually started playing a national schedule and quickly developed into one of the top juniors in the country. He lost to Scottie Scheffler in the semifinals of the 2013 U.S. Junior, and advanced to finals of both the 2014 U.S. Amateur Public Links and 2017 U.S. Amateur. He starred at the University of Texas as well, winning four times (more than Scheffler) and nabbing four All-America selections, plus the 2017 Big 12 Player of the Year and 2018 Ben Hogan Award. He also played on the victorious 2017 U.S. Walker Cup team and was one of three players to go 4-0 along with Collin Morikawa and Mav McNealy.
Ghim turned pro in 2018, and the next year, he holed a 6-foot putt at the Korn Ferry Tour Championship to clinch his PGA Tour card. He’s never lost his card, though he did finish No. 125 on the FedExCup points list in 2021-22, and he owns just four top-10s in 162 career starts.
He entered this week’s Deere at No. 124.
Said Ghim on Friday evening: "When things are going well you feel like you're the most patient person in the world, and for some reason when things aren't going well it's even harder to be patient. It's an ongoing lesson.
"... I've been in position at The Players, been in position at multiple tournaments. I almost won in Vegas last year. Every time I get in there and play and compete and try to win a tournament, you definitely learn a lot. You usually turn back and go, man, I really didn't need to press there and I wish I didn't. You don't really need to press until you really, really do, and it's usually really obvious when that moment is. So just learning to kind of stay in there and hang in there and forcing the issue is never really the answer from what I've learned. It's always just hanging in there.
"Winning is hard for everybody. ... It's that volatile of a sport. That's why we love playing it."

I AM NOT WATCHING THIS HALFTIME SHOW, OUT OF RESPECT FOR MY BROTHER LIL WAYNE, WHO OBVIOUSLY SHOULD BE PLAYING IN HIS HOMETOWN OF NEW ORLEANS. THIS IS JUST SO WRONG.
When Kevin Streelman made his first cut on the PGA TOUR, he was living out of his car and had $20 to his name.
Today, @Streels54 made his 300th cut on TOUR @Sanderson_Champ 👏

.@notthefakeSVP said he prayed most of the day that he wouldn’t get teared up talking with his good friend Stuart Scott’s daughters @TaeAndSyd tonight.
But he did.
