I asked a question to my team and got silence in return
I sat there for a few moments, the silence getting loud
Instead of putting it on the team...
I opened the door for feedback
and asked if my question was clear or needs restated
I could sense a shift in the environment
Conversation started flowing again and people asked for clarification
I thanked them for saying I wasn't clear and tried again
This time, I sharpened my question
And got tons of valuable engagement
----
Sometimes it's important to check yourself
If people aren't responding, it may not be them
It may be you.
Be willing to ask if you can be sharper and clearer
It will change the engagement and net better outcomes
@Codie_Sanchez Even the things you are 'naturally good at' will be hard.
They won't be if you don't work to develop them and put them to use in a valuable way.
But anything good comes with sweat equity.
Want to get ahead?
Take what you are learning on this platform
And put it to use in your job
Yes, the job you want to get away from
----
You need to start somewhere and you need to practice
Why not practice it in your current job
You will be surprised how you will get more
- Attention
- Opportunity
- Influence
- Authority
Given enough time.... more pay.
Heck, you might even start enjoying your job.
There is no:
- Perfect Time to Start
- Perfect person to be with
- Perfect life to live
- Perfect job
- Perfect answer
There is no "100%"...
Hell, there is no "90%"...
This is life. Don't look for surety.
Look inside yourself and see what you want.
Then do the work required.
Want to start something?
= Start. Learn. Adjust
Want a perfect partner?
- Start. Learn. Adjust. Grow 'with' your partner.
Want the perfect life?
- Start. Learn what this really means. Find peace.
Want the perfect job?
- Start in your current position. Test and iterate.
Want the perfect answer?
- I think you get the picture
Your answers and your new reality only come to you when you do the work.
Strong way to open my X app today. You nailed it.
These wins come from several unseen actions and "failure".
I did a topic for 300+ people on Thursday.
I spoke for 15 minutes on something with 6 months of history.
I worked and reworked my content until it was simple enough to understand and for people to connect.
Do the work. It matters.
I travel regularly for my corporate job.
This year, I shifted my travel life focus to "rest".
> Changed the hotels I stay at
> Not doing "evenings out" every day
> Working a normal schedule
I am now better during those trips..physically and mentally
And when I get home my family doesn't suffer the consequences of my "always on" crash when I come home.
@jimheskel I cannot read my writing most of the time!!!
I prefer digital notes as my thoughts and writing speed are more in sync.
It allows me the ability to throw away 70% of what I write without significant lost time.
Not sure how I got this but I had to laugh.
We were looking for apartments for our daughter last month.
The same challenge exists today.
They don't need a big space for television.
YouTube is 'their TV time' and it is done on their phones or their laptops.
It's time to reinvent the 700SF apartment.
@blakeaburge Not enough families use "we" any longer.
- It's my money
- It's my car
- It's my bank account
- That's your child
- It's what I want
- Those are your bills
Foundational cracks abound
Let' me throw out a tweak to what you said.
Your Personal Brand "always" matters.
Not just when you've achieved authority.
If you suck as a human being, you will not achieve true authority.
When you are a professional and treat people like humans - from day one - you will be remembered.
Your words will matter
Your presence will matter
Your engagement will matter
You, then, become an authority.
----
It's tough, but your brand is set from the very beginning.
Even when you are struggling to stand on your own two feet.
----
btw. I like your statement on engineering your influence.
In the process of closing a business.
With the decision made 4 weeks ago
I can see things with more clarity.
In the small market we were serving it was clear there were two market segments.
Our business straddled the line between both.
This confused the consumer because they didn't know "what" we were.
While we are stepping away at break-even
We have a much better understanding of the market.
This understanding was shaped "after" our decision.
Others in the market discussed their own struggles
and where they are right now and what might be ahead.
I took a lot of notes.
Now I see an opportunity to fully segment those markets into the two categories I mentioned.
I also know.....
I have no interest to serve the underserved segment.
why?
- Noise to Value Ratio
- Customer (spend little; expect the world)
- Takes away from 'new' primary direction
Could there be profit from this new understanding?
yes.
But I wouldn't enjoy it.
@markgadala For sure. Freedom is a phased approach as they mature and failure is inevitable.
But just knowing they have a father to lean on can be the key difference in a critical stage of life.
