Other countries are tightening their citizenship rules, yet Ireland still appears willing to grant citizenship to people who may not be net contributors to the State.
The Government is now proposing a self-sufficiency requirement, including restrictions around certain welfare payments in the two years before applying, but why stop there? Two years???
Irish citizenship should mean something. We should be looking at a ten-year requirement, with no serious criminal record and no long-term reliance on benefits for most of that period.
Citizenship should be earned, not handed out. It’s not a right, it’s a privilege that inky people of good character should be given.
