nobody will remember:
your salary
how busy you were
how many hours you worked
people will remember:
the thousand injuries you inflicted
the time you ventured upon insult
your sincerity in the matter of the old wines
With each passing year it becomes progressively more obvious which games - particularly at AAA level - actually let their composers compose / exercise the full extent of their creative chops and which games have soundtracks that are focus-grouped/over-directed/music-supervised to within an inch of their life, often by people that aren't actually writing the music at all and don't truly understand not just the technical aspect of game music, but the very different emotional/brain function that happens because gaming is an active entertainment medium not passive.
That's not to say one approach or the other is better than the other, sometimes supervision and direction is necessary particularly in a time crunch, and there are plenty of excellent examples of some very well directed scores.
But the vast majority of successful and memorable game scores these days are a direct result of the composer(s) and his/her team being involved from the ground floor and being regarded as a core creative and not just a post-production creative. This is particularly important for new IP but applies across the board.
When you have that connective tissue between composer / music team + game, special things happen. If it's just production line music (follow instructions), it rarely results in high quality creative output, at best, something functional. Sometimes functional is all you need, but surely it's best to try and shoot as high as possible.
I feel like in 2024 this should be obvious, but there's still a lot more to be done at the dev level to have music feel way more connected to games.
We have so much *great music in games*, but we have far less *great game music*. The latter of which is music that is so closely synergized to the game that it is thus inseparable from the game itself. There is a big difference. The latter almost always happens within the scenario I describe above.
Of course exceptions on all sides to all this, but it's just a feeling I've had grow over the last few years.
Thoughts from other composers, developers, and players definitely welcome.
very excited to say that in a relatively last minute decision, im going to @developconf for the first time! i'll be at the expo on tuesday and wednesday, please feel free to say hi and let's talk music ๐๐ธ
The data shows that despite this monster win, Labour have less of the vote than Jeremy Corbyn received in 2017. That is huge.
The message of this election is anti-tory, not pro Starmer.
@JWLAudio bless you josh, im glad you enjoyed & found it useful - thank you so much for your kind words (and for motivating me to actually play the mini every day) ๐๐
had such a great day at @GameAudioSympos today, thank you to everyone who attended! see you all tomorrow for some more game audio goodness, and feel free to say hi if you're there! ๐๐ธ
