Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a tireless advocate for racial equality, working classes, and the oppressed around the world. Every year, the third Monday of January is set aside as a federal holiday to honor his life and legacy.
Next Monday, January 20th, is Martin Luther King Junior Day. National Parks will all be open as normal for "For the Benefit and Enjoyment of the People." Castle Clinton will be open normal hours on January 20th and offering tours as usual. Make sure to stop by!
Castle Clinton will be closed on Thursday, November 28th so staff can spend Thanksgiving with friends and family. In addition, the Statue of Liberty, Ellis Island and their ferries will also not operate that day. All three will resume normal operating hours on Friday, the 29th.
Today, Veterans Day, we honor all those who have served and sacrificed for this country. The National Park Service invites all Americans to spend time in parks today, to connect with family and friends while exploring all our incredible parks and historic sites have to offer.
WOW! Castle Clinton Rangers offered a special tour of "Castle Garden Emigrant Depot" to visitors for Open House New York last weekend. Over 225 people in total took the tour between our six tour offerings on Saturday and Sunday. Thanks to all those who came out!
Due to the construction around Battery Park, the perimeter of Castle Clinton is now surrounded by a new set of walls. Though we may look closed, Castle Clinton is still open to the public on our normal schedule, 7:45 am to 5 pm daily.
Throughout the late summer and fall of 1824, every town and county laid out its best celebrations for Marquis de Lafayette as he traveled across the United States. Yet none ever matched the splendor of the gala festivities held at Castle Garden on September 14th, 1824.

Today is the 200th Anniversary of Marquis de Lafayette's Landing at Castle Garden, and we celebrated it in style π. Thanks to the National Parks of New York Harbor Mather Interns and all others who came out to help us celebrate! ππ#FindYourPark#NPS#Lafayette
On Sunday, August 15th, 1824, Marquis de Lafayette arrived in New York Harbor to a salute of cannons from Fort Diamond (later renamed Fort Lafayette). At the request of the city government, he delayed his planned landing in Battery Park until Monday, August 16th.

Join Castle Clinton Rangers on July 4th, as we celebrate the 248th anniversary of American Independence with a special flag raising ceremony by the Veteran Corp of Artillery. #July4th#Independence#FindYourPark
Yesterday was Juneteenth, an old celebration in the African American community which commemorates the end slavery in America. To celebrate, visitors to Castle Clinton were treated to a performance of African Drumming Obayanna Olumide and his partner Victoria.
In 1824, Marquis de Lafayette found himself the last living General of the American War of Independence. Invited to visit the US on a tour celebrating the 50th anniversary of American Independence, Lafayette agreed, and set sail from France for New York City.
Last Thursday, in collaboration with the Tenement Museum and Federal Hall National Memorial, Castle Clinton Rangers participated in a teachers workshop for local educators. Educators were treated to a special tour of Castle Clinton, focusing on the Castle Garden Emigrant Depot.
Memorial Day is great day to visit a National Park, especially one with a military history like Castle Clinton! Don't just take our word for it, our friendly neighborhood ring-billed gulls are out encouraging everyone to spend the day outside learning about our shared history!
Though Marquis de Lafayette had left France in 1777 without royal support, his exploits in America had earned him a hero's welcome home. His return to France was triumphant, displaying how in just a short time, Lafayette had reinvented himself and earned the fame he so coveted.
