Man Airlifted to Hospital after Shark Bite off County Waterford Coast

A man is receiving treatment in hospital after suffering a leg injury from a shark bite while aboard a small vessel off Ardmore, County Waterford, on Tuesday afternoon.

According to the Department of Transport and Irish Coast Guard, the Marine Rescue Co-ordination Centre in Dublin was alerted by a 999/112 call at approximately 4.15pm on 11 August. The report indicated that a male on a small fishing vessel or 5-metre pleasure craft south of Ardmore (approximately four miles off Ram Head) had sustained a leg injury inflicted by a shark bite. Five people were on board at the time.

A multi-agency response was launched, involving the Waterford-based Irish Coast Guard Helicopter Rescue 117, the Ballycotton RNLI all-weather lifeboat, and the Youghal RNLI inshore lifeboat.

The casualty was winched aboard Rescue 117 and transferred to Cork University Hospital, where he was handed over to the care of the Health Service Executive (HSE). He remains in hospital. His injuries are understood to be serious but not life-threatening.

Ballycotton RNLI Coxswain Eolan Walsh described the operation as a well-coordinated multi-agency effort that ensured the casualty received urgent medical assistance as quickly and safely as possible. The remaining crew members required no assistance, and the vessel later returned safely to Dungarvan. Both RNLI lifeboats were subsequently stood down.

It is understood the man was bitten by a blue shark (a species that typically averages around three metres in length) while attempting to control it after it had been brought on board. Shark bites remain extremely rare in Irish waters, which are home to numerous shark, skate and ray species, particularly off the south coast during summer months.

No additional official safety warnings or broader public advisories have been issued in connection with this isolated incident as of the latest reports.
