4A2-So very true! Many talk about the great opportunity it is to know a foreign exchange student, but some forget we have that treasure in our newcomers/ELLs! It's especially fun to get to know students at the holidays as we all get to share our traditions. #GCS_Newcomers/SIFE
3A1-Suggestions for content teachers who are new to SIFE include: LOTS of visuals, examples, sentence frames, native language support, and working with partners. The partner doesn't always have to be someone who has the same L1. #GCS_Newcomers/SIFE
@JeanaThompson14 Yes, it definitely takes a village. Sometimes teachers tend to think I'm the students' only ESOL teacher, but in reality, it's every single one of us in the building. We're all helping each ELL learn English.
2Q3-I think it's important that teachers realize unaccompanied minors can have some of the same emotional needs as refugee students. Both groups may suffer from PTSD. There is often a lot more on the mind of our students than academic learning. #GCS_Newcomers/SIFE
@mccrae_melanie Yes! Same for me. I was a business major and spent a few years working in retail & banking and absolutely hated it. I started working as an ESL aide and definitely felt that "zing" that he mentioned! I know I couldn't do anything else and be happy.
1A1-Relationship is everything! Students are able to try out their new writing and speaking skills when they trust you and feel safe in the classroom. I try to make our classroom feel like home and even made a sign for it! @TanELLclassroom @GCS_Newcomers/SIFE
