A little “inside baseball” regarding churches and why most struggle to reach people:
Most churches are plateaued or declining. Very few grow and reach new people. There are several reasons for this, which I’ll highlight in a moment, but the common response from most churches is to look for silver bullets. They think, “If we can…
- have better music,
- renovate or build a new building,
- upgrade technology,
- get a good vision and mission statement,
- start a contemporary service,
- transition to casual dress attire, or
- create cool-sounding teaching series,
…then we’ll start reaching people new to the community or those who don’t go to church.”
None of that will work. Why? Because those aren’t the reasons why they’re stuck or declining.
It begins with leaders who have convictions. Leaders can’t simply desire to maintain the status quo or “keep the peace.” Leaders need vision and the courage to implement it. They must be willing to lead without fear of losing their job and be willing to risk their position to do the right things.
It also requires church members who are eager to see God work in their church, even at the cost of their convenience or preferences. It’s okay to have preferences—everyone does—but churches that die are the ones that prioritize their own wants over the mission of the church.
It requires a commitment to more than feeding the church milk. We live in a chaotic world that devours immature believers. Most churches struggle to teach their people how to properly interpret Scripture, and they certainly don’t equip them to talk about issues of sexuality, gender, and other pressing topics that believers encounter every day. This is especially true for kids and students.
If Christians don’t feel equipped to deal with the real world because their church doesn’t disciple and prepare them, they’ll leave that church. Biblical illiteracy is rampant in our culture, and most churches fare no better. Most Christians can’t have an informed theological conversation with someone. Most don’t know how to answer hard questions that might be asked of them by an unbelieving coworker or friend. And we wonder why churches are fading into irrelevance when the world needs them most?!
All of this, combined with a spirit of humility, urgency, and authenticity—often lacking in churches—is how churches begin to gain traction and make progress. It’s also why focusing on the superficial things I mentioned at the beginning is a waste of time and money if you don’t get these foundational aspects right. Spending money is easy. Doing the work of discipling people or having the courage to say hard things is hard.
So most struggling churches choose the easy route and wonder why nothing ever changes. It doesn’t have to be that way. Our church reaches 2K+ people per weekend and growing…with no silver bullets. No compromise. No tip-toeing around issues. People are starving for depth, realness, and help. If you do those things, your church can thrive.
