I work the front desk at a small doctor’s office, and I wish people could see what happens on the other side of the phone. Every day, older patients call us confused.

They are told to use the patient portal, upload documents, check lab results online, fill out forms before the visit, and confirm everything through a link. Some of them do not know what a portal is.

Some do not have a smartphone.
Some have one, but they are afraid to click the wrong thing.
Last week, a man in his late 80s called about his test results.

He said, “Ma’am, I don’t mean to bother you, but the computer says I have a message and I don’t know how to open it.”
He sounded ashamed.
That broke my heart.

He should not have to feel ashamed for needing a human being.
Technology can be helpful. I understand that.

But when people who built this country are made to feel helpless because everything became a login and a password, we have gone too far.
Not everything needs to be an app.
Not every answer should be hidden behind a screen.

Sometimes people need a voice.
A patient person.
A real human who says, “Don’t worry, I can help you.”
Progress should not leave seniors behind.

Because one day, the world will move faster than us too.
And I hope someone is kind enough to slow down.

Every campaign should stand for something bigger than a single election.

Mine does.

It can be summed up in three words:

Michigan State First.

Those words are more than a slogan. They are the standard I will use to evaluate every decision, every vote, and every issue if I have the privilege of serving on the Michigan State University Board of Trustees.

Too often, conversations surrounding our university have become consumed by politics, personalities, and public disagreements. Meanwhile, the people who matter most—our students, faculty, staff, researchers, alumni, and supporters—are left wondering whether the Board is focused on advancing the university or advancing competing agendas.

Michigan State deserves better.

The Board of Trustees exists for one purpose: to ensure the long-term success of one of America's premier public universities.

That means protecting academic excellence.

Supporting world-class research.

Being responsible stewards of taxpayer and donor dollars.

Creating opportunities for students.

Hiring and evaluating outstanding university leadership.

Strengthening the value of every Michigan State degree.

Everything else should be secondary.

As an alumnus, former Michigan State staff member, longtime supporter of Spartan Athletics, and someone whose life has been profoundly shaped by this university, I understand what Michigan State means to hundreds of thousands of people across our state and beyond.

It is more than a campus.

It is more than a diploma.

It is a lifelong community.

That community deserves trustees who listen first, lead with integrity, and remember that every decision ultimately affects real people.

My own experiences have only strengthened that belief.

Challenges taught me that leadership isn't about being the loudest voice in the room. It's about listening carefully, bringing people together, making thoughtful decisions, and treating others with dignity and respect.

Those are the values I will bring to the Board.

Being an independent candidate means I am not running to represent a political party. I am running to represent Michigan State University.

When difficult issues arise—and they always do—I won't ask what is best for a political organization or a special interest.

I'll ask one question:

What is best for Michigan State?

If the answer benefits students, strengthens the university, protects its reputation, and prepares it for the future, then that's the direction I will support.

If it doesn't, I'll say so.

Leadership requires both collaboration and courage.

Before I can earn the opportunity to serve, I must first qualify for the ballot. Michigan law requires independent candidates for statewide office to collect 12,000 valid signatures from registered Michigan voters by July 16.

This campaign is powered entirely by people who believe Michigan State deserves independent leadership grounded in transparency, accountability, respect, and service.

Because this campaign has never been about me.

It has always been about putting Michigan State First.

If we are not going to overhaul our system, we can at least tweak it.

Trustees are elected to 8-year terms.

Why are we electing trustees to terms 4 years longer than the Governor? Or 6 years longer than a state rep?

8 years is too long, especially given there is no reliable mechanism to remove them early. We know we can’t trust the governor to do it.

Their terms should be 4 years, max. If they were, Rema Vassar would have been gone 1.5 years ago.
