Very reassuring to see this concrete result coming from @Eurojust’s joint investigation team into war crimes committed in #Ukraine.

Today, as a result of the meeting with the President of @Eurojust Ladislav Hamran, the Minister of Justice of Poland @Adbodnar, the Prosecutors General of Lithuania, Latvia, and Romania: Nida Grunskienė, Juris Stukans and Alex Florin Florenta, we have agreed to extend the mandate of the Joint Investigation Team aimed at ensuring accountability for international crimes committed in the course of Russia's war against Ukraine.

Lithuania has announced the first suspicions of war crimes resulting from the #JIT’s investigations. Three servicemen of the Russian proxies were charged with the heinous murder of a Lithuanian citizen in Mariupol in April 2022. The victim, a civilian who took no part in the hostilities, endured torture, including being shot, beaten, and slashed with a knife, leading to his tragic death.

The identification of these suspects underscores that even when war crimes are committed in the occupied territories, the perpetrators will not escape justice.

I'm pleased to see that after two years of the JIT's work, support for Ukraine has only grown stronger. Grateful to our colleagues for their cooperation and commitment. I'm confident that our united efforts will continue to yield more results in our quest for justice.
