If Lamar Jackson were up for it, my guess is the Ravens would do this deal in a heartbeat.
Adam Schefter reported that Baltimore’s offer back in September was $250M total with $200M guaranteed ($133M gtd at signing and $175M gtd for injury).
Both that offer and Hurts’ deal are well short of the $230M *fully* gtd money that Watson got.
How other NFL teams have talked about Lamar Jackson within the last week vs how the Ravens have talked about him:
49ers HC Mike Shanahan: "We got three QBs that we're pretty good with right now."
Bucs HC Todd Bowles: "We know it's time for us to get under the cap, and he makes a lot of money.”
Colts didn’t rule him out, but owner Jim Irsay said: “As an owner I do not believe in fully guaranteed contracts…When you have a rookie QB, it gives you the opportunity to build a franchise for the first 3 or 4 years.”
Falcons owner Arthur Blank: "Looking at it objectively, I'd say there's some concern over how long can he play his style of game. Hopefully, a long time ... but he's missed 5, 6 games each of the last 2 years. Each game counts a lot in our business."
Panthers GM Scott Fitterer, "He’s a great option, a really expensive option. But we're focused on more of the draft picks at this point."
Lions HC Dan Campbell: “Lamar is a heck of a talent. But, man, we got a quarterback. And thank God we got one. So, we're good."
Pats owner Robert Kraft: “That's Bill [Belichick]'s decision."
Jets GM Joe Douglas: “It would be disingenuous and … negotiating in bad faith if we went down the path. Right now, we have our plan.”
Seahawks HC Pete Carroll: “We're not interested. … I couldn't imagine him being available, and we couldn't afford him."
Commanders GM Martin Mayhew: "For us right now, we’re moving forward with Sam [Howell] and Jacoby [Brissett]."
Ravens HC John Harbaugh: “That's the guy I want to see be our QB. That's my guy. We made a decision to go with Lamar Jackson five years ago. Why? Because we love him. We *love* him. We love the way he plays. We love his mindset. His charisma. His style. The way he is in the locker room. Everything about him - we love him."
“The Ravens wouldn’t match my value” says LJ a month after the Ravens placed a non-exclusive tag on him that literally guarantees they’d have to match his market value if they wanted to keep him.
I’ve been silent on this front because I know it will be misconstrued as me somehow belittling Lamar — but if the past week or so didn’t make it abundantly clear, his camps decision to announce his desire to be traded TWO WEEKS into teams spending in free agency, makes it obvious.
Lamar sorely needs an agent…
Jeff Zrebiec: “It’s worth asking: If Lamar Jackson was hearing what he wanted to hear and generating the interest that he wanted, why would he feel the need to go public with a trade demand? Marquise Brown & Hayden Hurst, have gotten their trade request granted by doing it privately.
“Today’s move suggests things aren’t exactly going in the right direction and he — or whoever is advising him — felt the need to play hardball.”
